The story

Elizabeth I

Hello! My name is Elizabeth, and I became one of England's most famous queens. My story begins on September 7th, 1533, when I was born in Greenwich, England. My father was the powerful King Henry VIII, and my mother was the clever Queen Anne Boleyn. My father had desperately wanted a son to be his heir, so he was a bit disappointed when I was born a girl. When I was not yet three years old, something terrible happened. In 1536, my father had my mother executed. Suddenly, I was told I was no longer a true princess. It was a very confusing and lonely time for a little girl, but I found comfort in my studies. I loved learning and worked very hard, mastering many languages like Latin, French, and Italian. I didn't know it then, but this love of learning would one day help me become a great ruler.

After my father died, my younger half-brother, Edward, became king. When he passed away, my older half-sister, Mary, took the throne. Mary and I had very different beliefs about religion, which caused a lot of trouble between us. In 1554, she became so suspicious of me that she had me arrested and locked away in the scary Tower of London! I was terrified and thought I might never get out. But I held onto hope, and eventually, I was released. Then, on November 17th, 1558, my sister Mary died, and everything changed. At 25 years old, I became the Queen of England. My coronation on January 15th, 1559, was a magnificent day. As I wore the heavy crown for the first time, I promised to be a good and fair queen to all my people.

As queen, I had to make many big decisions. One of the first was about marriage. Everyone expected me to marry a prince or a king from another country, but I decided not to. I famously told my advisors that I was married to my country, England. This meant I could rule on my own, without sharing my power with a husband. People started calling me 'The Virgin Queen' or 'Good Queen Bess.' My reign faced many challenges, but the greatest came in 1588. The King of Spain sent a giant fleet of warships, called the Spanish Armada, to invade my kingdom. I traveled to Tilbury to speak to my soldiers, telling them I had the heart and stomach of a king! Our smaller, faster English ships fought bravely, and with the help of a big storm, we defeated the mighty Armada. It was a huge victory! The rest of my long reign is often called a 'Golden Age.' It was a time of great exploration, and a brilliant writer named William Shakespeare was writing his famous plays.

I ruled as Queen of England for more than 44 years, a very long time for that era. I brought peace and strength to my country after many years of trouble. I lived to be 69 years old and my long reign came to a peaceful end in 1603. I am remembered today as a powerful, intelligent, and dedicated queen who proved that a woman could be one of the greatest leaders in history. My time as queen, the Elizabethan Age, is remembered as a time of victory, culture, and national pride for England.
