A Story About Francis Bacon

Hello! My name is Francis Bacon. I lived a very long time ago in a country called England. I was born on January 22nd, 1561. When I was a little boy, my mind was always buzzing with questions. I loved to look at the world around me and wonder, "How does that work?" or "Why does that happen?" People had a lot of old answers for things, but I wasn't satisfied just believing them. I wanted to find out for myself if they were really true. My curiosity was like a little engine inside me that never stopped running.

When I was only 12 years old, in the year 1573, I went to a very special school called Trinity College at Cambridge University. It was a big deal to go to college so young. I loved learning new things and reading books, but I noticed something strange. Most of the learning was just about reading what famous thinkers from long ago had written. I thought, "There must be a better way to find the truth!" I believed we shouldn't just read about the world; we should look at it, touch it, and test it for ourselves to really understand it.

I came up with a very important idea that I like to call my 'recipe for discovery.' Today, people call it the scientific method, and it helps us learn in a clear and organized way. My recipe has simple steps. First, you start with a question about something you see, like, "Why does a plant grow toward the sun?" Next, you make a smart guess, which is your best idea about the answer. But here is the most important part: you must then do an experiment to test if your guess is correct. You have to see it with your own eyes. This way, you are not just believing something; you are proving it. I wrote all about this new way of thinking in a book called 'Novum Organum' in 1620.

Thinking and writing were not the only things I did. I also had a very important job working for the leaders of England. I helped give advice to the famous Queen Elizabeth I, which was a great honor. Later, in 1618, I became the Lord Chancellor for King James I. This was one of the most important jobs in the whole country. It showed that I was busy helping to run the kingdom as well as sharing my ideas about science and learning.

I lived to be 65 years old, and I spent my whole life being curious and asking questions. My 'recipe for discovery' truly changed the world. It gave scientists and thinkers a brand-new way to learn about our universe. Today, scientists still use my ideas to make amazing discoveries, from finding new stars in space to creating new medicines that keep us healthy. My biggest hope was to show everyone that the best way to find the truth is to test your ideas for yourself.
