The story

Frederick Banting: A Gift for the World

Hello! My name is Frederick Banting, and I want to tell you my story. I was born on a farm in Canada on November 14th, 1891. Growing up on the farm was busy, but I always loved learning how things worked. More than anything, I knew I wanted to spend my life helping people who were sick. That's why I decided to become a doctor. I even served as a doctor in a big war. Seeing so many people who needed help made me want to find new ways to make them feel better more than ever.

When I was a young doctor, there was a very serious sickness called diabetes. It made people, especially children, very sick because their bodies couldn't use the sugar from their food for energy. I thought about this problem all the time. Then one night in 1920, I woke up with an idea buzzing in my head! I thought I knew how to find a special 'juice' inside a part of the body called the pancreas that could help. In 1921, I went to a big school, the University of Toronto, to test my idea. There, a smart young man named Charles Best and I started working together. We spent the whole summer in a small lab trying to make my idea work.

Charles and I worked very hard. After lots of experiments, we did it! We found the special 'juice' and named it insulin. In 1922, we gave the first shot of insulin to a young boy named Leonard Thompson who was very sick with diabetes. And guess what? He started to get better! It was like a miracle. We knew insulin could help so many people. We wanted everyone to be able to have it, so we shared our discovery with the world for just one dollar. A year later, in 1923, I was given a very special award called the Nobel Prize. I made sure to share it with my friend Charles, because teamwork made our dream come true.

I spent the rest of my life as a scientist, always looking for new ways to help people. I lived to be 49 years old. Even though my story ended, my work has not. Today, my discovery of insulin helps millions of people with diabetes live long, healthy, and happy lives. It shows that sometimes, a single idea, a bit of hard work, and good friends can change the world for the better.
