Just want George Boole?
Hello! My name is George Boole. I was born a long time ago, on November 2nd, 1815, in a town called Lincoln, in England. My father was a shoemaker, but his real love was learning about science and math, and he taught me everything he knew. I didn't get to go to school for very long because my family needed me to help earn money, but I never stopped learning. I thought of learning as a fun game, and I even taught myself new languages by reading books all on my own!
When I grew up, I became a teacher and opened my own school in 1834. I loved teaching, but my mind was always buzzing with a big question. I wondered if I could use math to understand ideas. I thought about simple words like 'AND,' 'OR,' and 'NOT.' Could I turn these words into a math problem? I discovered that I could! I figured out a way to use symbols to show if an idea was 'true' or 'false.' In 1847, I wrote my first book about this special new kind of math, which people later called Boolean Logic.
My ideas were so new and exciting that in 1849, I was asked to become a professor at a university in Ireland, even though I had never gone to one myself! A few years later, I married a wonderful woman named Mary Everest, who also loved math and ideas. In 1854, I wrote my most famous book, 'An Investigation of the Laws of Thought.' It was filled with my ideas about how logic could work just like algebra, using rules to make sure everything made perfect sense.
I lived to be 49 years old. For a long time after, my ideas were just interesting puzzles for other mathematicians. But then, something incredible happened! Almost 100 years later, people who were building the very first computers discovered my work. They realized that my 'true' and 'false' logic was the perfect language for these new machines. Today, every time you search for something online, play a video game, or use a smartphone, you're using the Boolean Logic I invented so long ago. My ideas became the building blocks for our amazing digital world!
