The story

Giuseppe Garibaldi

Hello! My name is Giuseppe Garibaldi. I was born on July 4th, 1807, in a sunny city by the sea called Nice. When I was a boy, I loved to watch the big, blue water and dream about having adventures on a ship. My dreams were as big as the ocean! When I grew up, I did just that. I became a sailor and then a captain, sailing across the sea just like I had always hoped.

In my time, the land of Italy wasn't one big country like you see on a map today. It was broken into many small kingdoms, each with its own ruler. My biggest dream was to see all of these little pieces come together to form one strong, free country. I believed that everyone in Italy should be part of the same big family, living together in a united nation.

My fight for freedom didn't just stay in Italy. It took me on a long journey all the way across the ocean to South America! I helped people there fight for their own freedom, too. Because I fought for liberty in both Europe and South America, people began to call me the 'Hero of the Two Worlds.' It was in South America that I met my wonderful and brave wife, Anita. She was a fantastic soldier and fought right by my side in our battles for freedom.

After my time in South America, I returned to Italy because I knew it was time to make my dream come true. I gathered a small army of brave volunteers who believed in one united Italy just like I did. We were called the 'Redshirts' because of the simple red shirts we all wore as our uniform. In the year 1860, about a thousand of us sailed to an island called Sicily. This special mission was called the Expedition of the Thousand. We fought hard to bring the southern parts of Italy together with the north.

Our big adventure was a success! My Redshirts and I freed many people and brought many places together. After our victories, I met with the king, Victor Emmanuel II. I gave him the lands that we had won so they could become part of a new, bigger Italy. This was a very important step. In 1861, the Kingdom of Italy was finally announced. My dream of one united country had finally come true!

After all the fighting was over, I moved to a small, quiet island. I put down my sword and became a farmer, enjoying a peaceful life. I lived to be 74 years old, and I was so happy that I got to see my beloved Italy become one nation. Today, people in Italy remember me as a national hero who helped create their country. You can even find streets and statues with my name on them, honoring my love for freedom.
