Giuseppe Verdi: A Life in Music

Ciao! My name is Giuseppe Verdi. I want to tell you my story. I was born in a very small village in Italy called Le Roncole on October 10th, 1813. Even when I was a little boy, my biggest love was music! I loved listening to the traveling musicians who passed through my town, but my favorite sound was the giant organ at our church. When I was just a boy, I started taking lessons and learned to play it myself. I would spend hours making music that filled the whole room.

When I got a little older, I moved to a bigger town called Busseto to study music. A kind man named Antonio Barezzi saw that I had a special talent and helped me pay for my lessons. I worked very, very hard to learn everything I could about music. Soon, I started writing my own music for something called an opera. An opera is like a play where the story is told through singing and a big orchestra. In 1842, my opera Nabucco was performed for the first time. The people loved it so much, especially a song from it called 'Va, pensiero.' They sang it in the streets!

After Nabucco, I kept writing more and more operas. Each one told a new and exciting story. I wrote one called Rigoletto about a sad but funny court jester. I wrote another called La Traviata which was a beautiful, but tragic, love story. One of my most famous operas was called Aida, which I wrote in 1871. It was a giant story set in ancient Egypt with kings, queens, and pyramids! My music became famous all across Italy and then all over the world. It was my dream come true to share my musical stories with so many people.

I lived a very long and happy life filled with music. I lived to be 87 years old. Even though I am no longer here, my music lives on. Today, my operas are still performed in beautiful, grand theaters all around the world. People still come to hear the exciting stories I told through my songs, and the powerful music still makes people feel big emotions—from happy and excited to sad and thoughtful. I hope my music makes you feel something special, too.
