Hello! My name is Gustav Klimt. I was born on July 14th, 1862, in a town called Baumgarten, right near the big city of Vienna, Austria. My father was a gold engraver, so our home was always filled with shiny tools and precious metals. I grew up with two brothers, Ernst and Georg, and we all loved to draw and create things. Seeing my father work with gold made me fall in love with beautiful, glowing things from a very young age, and that feeling would stay with me for my whole life.
I was so serious about art that when I was only 14 years old, in 1876, I earned a spot at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts. It was a very important school, and I was excited to learn everything I could. My brother Ernst and our good friend Franz Matsch studied there with me. After we finished our studies, the three of us started our own group called the 'Company of Artists.' We were hired to paint huge, beautiful pictures called murals on the walls and ceilings of important buildings. In 1888, we painted grand murals inside Vienna’s famous Burgtheater, and people loved them! It was a wonderful start to my career.
As I got older, I felt that art needed a fresh start. The old rules felt a bit stiff, and I wanted to create art that was new and exciting. So, in 1897, I joined with some other artists to form a group called the Vienna Secession. We wanted to break away—or 'secede'—from the traditional art styles that everyone was used to. Our goal was to bring modern and different kinds of art to our city, showing that painting, architecture, and design were all important forms of creativity. We wanted to show people a new way of seeing the world.

Around the year 1903, I began the most famous part of my career, which people now call my 'Golden Phase.' I had traveled to Italy and seen ancient mosaics made of tiny, glittering tiles. They were so beautiful that they inspired me to start using real gold leaf in my paintings. It made my art shimmer and glow in the light! During this time, I painted some of my most famous works. I completed the 'Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I' in 1907 and 'The Kiss' between 1907 and 1908. I loved filling my canvases with detailed patterns, interesting symbols, and powerful images of strong women.
I kept painting for the rest of my life, always trying new ideas and exploring different styles. I lived to be 55 years old and passed away in 1918. Today, my paintings are famous all over the world. People travel to museums just to see the swirling patterns and the shimmering gold in my art. I hope my work shows that it's wonderful to break the rules sometimes and create something that is uniquely, beautifully yours.
