Just want H. G. Wells?
Hello! My name is H. G. Wells, but you can call me George. I was born on September 21st, 1866, in a town called Bromley in England. When I was a boy, I had an accident and had to stay in bed for a long time. It was very boring until my father started bringing me books from the library. I read about amazing places and grand adventures, and that's when I fell in love with stories and the power of imagination.
I loved to learn, especially about science. In 1884, I went to a special school in London to study biology. My teacher, Thomas Henry Huxley, taught me all about animals and how living things change over many years. All these incredible science lessons made my imagination buzz with big questions. What if a person could travel through time? What if someone could become invisible? What if visitors came to Earth from another planet, like Mars?
I decided to turn my big questions into exciting stories. I wanted to take my readers on fantastic adventures without them ever having to leave their chairs! In 1895, I wrote a book called 'The Time Machine' about a man who builds a special chair to visit the future. A few years later, in 1898, I wrote 'The War of the Worlds', a story about Martians landing on Earth. People loved these new kinds of stories, which they started to call 'science fiction'.
I wrote many, many books during my life and loved sharing my ideas about what the future might be like. I lived to be 79 years old. Today, people still read my books and watch movies based on my stories. I am often called the 'Father of Science Fiction' because I helped show the world that science could be the start of the most wonderful adventures. I hope my stories inspire you to ask big questions and imagine amazing things, too!
