The story

Hypatia

Hello! My name is Hypatia. I lived a very long time ago, around the year 355, in a beautiful, busy city by the sea called Alexandria. My father, Theon, was a brilliant mathematician, and he was my favorite teacher. Instead of playing with dolls, I loved looking at the stars and learning about numbers. My father and I would spend hours talking about the sun, the moon, and all the shapes in the world. I learned that asking questions was the most exciting adventure of all.

When I grew up, I became a teacher myself. My school wasn't in a big building; I taught students right in my own home and in public places where anyone could come and listen. People traveled from far away to hear me speak about mathematics, astronomy, and philosophy—which is a way of thinking about how to be a good and happy person. I showed them how to use special tools, like an astrolabe, to map the stars in the night sky. I believed that learning was for everyone, no matter who they were. I also wrote books that helped make hard ideas from other great thinkers easier for my students to understand.

Alexandria was a wonderful city, but it was also a place where people had very strong and different ideas about the world. Sometimes, these disagreements could turn into big arguments between different groups of people. I always tried to be a friend to everyone and share my love of knowledge peacefully. But sadly, in the year 415, the city became a very angry place. Some people who were caught up in these arguments hurt me, and my life came to an end.

I lived to be about 60 years old. Even though my story had a sad ending, my love for learning lived on. People remembered me as a wise and courageous woman who wasn't afraid to be smart and to teach others. Today, my story inspires people all over the world, especially girls, to study science, mathematics, and philosophy. It shows that anyone can be a great thinker if they just keep asking questions and looking up at the stars.
