The story

James Clerk Maxwell: The Boy Who Chased Rainbows

Hello. My name is James Clerk Maxwell. A long time ago, in the year 1831, I was born in a beautiful place called Scotland. Even when I was a little boy, I was always asking questions. I wanted to know how everything worked. What is that? Why is it shiny? How does it move? My favorite thing to wonder about was colors. I had a special top that I loved to spin. When it spun round and round, all the pretty colors mixed together. It looked like magic.

When I grew up, I kept learning about colors and light. In the year 1861, I did something very special. I made the very first color photograph. It was like I captured a real rainbow and put it on a picture for everyone to see. I also discovered a big secret. I found out that light and electricity are like best friends that travel together. They send invisible waves through the air, like secret messages that fly super fast. You can't see them, but they are all around us.

My ideas about those invisible waves helped other smart people invent amazing things. Because of my discoveries, you have radios to listen to music, televisions to watch shows, and even cell phones to talk to people you love. I lived to be 48 years old. I am so happy that my questions about the world helped to light everything up for you and for everyone.
