Just want Jan Ingenhousz?
Hello! My name is Jan. A long, long time ago, in the year 1730, I was born. When I grew up, I became a doctor. I loved helping people feel better when they were sick. It made me so happy to see them smile. But I had another love, too. I loved watching plants grow. I was very curious about nature and all the green things I saw outside. I always wondered how they worked and what they did all day.
I decided to do some experiments to learn more. I put plants in water and watched them very closely. I noticed something amazing. When the bright sun was shining on them, the plants made tiny, little bubbles in the water. But when it was dark, there were no bubbles at all. I learned that the bubbles were a special kind of air that we all need to breathe. In the year 1779, I shared my big secret discovery! Plants use sunlight to make fresh, clean air for you and me.
My discovery helped everyone understand just how important plants and sunshine are. Plants are not just pretty to look at; they work hard to make the air we breathe. I lived to be 68 years old, and my work helped people learn how to stay healthy. People still remember me for finding out how plants help us all live. The next time you see a plant soaking up the sun, you can say, 'Thank you, plant!'
