A Story by Jawaharlal Nehru

Hello. My name is Jawaharlal Nehru. I was born a long, long time ago, on November 14th, 1889. In my country, India, lots of children called me Chacha Nehru. Do you know what that means? It means 'Uncle Nehru'. I loved children so much. I thought you were the most important people in the world. Every day, I wore a special jacket, and on my jacket, I always pinned a fresh red rose. I believed that children like you are the future, and you make the world a happy and beautiful place.

When I was a boy, my country of India was not free. This made me sad, so I wanted to help. I worked with my good friend, Mahatma Gandhi, and many other helpers. We all worked together for a very long time to help India become a peaceful and independent country. We wanted everyone to live together and be happy. Our big dream came true on August 15th, 1947. On that day, I became the very first Prime Minister of India. Being the Prime Minister is like being the head helper for all the people in the country.

I was the head helper for many years. I worked hard to build a strong and wonderful India for everyone. I lived to be 74 years old. Today, people in India still remember me and my love for children. They made my birthday, November 14th, a special holiday called Children's Day. It is a day to celebrate all the children in India and remember my dream for them to have a bright and happy future.
