The story

My Name Is Johannes, and I Love Books

Hello! My name is Johannes Gutenberg. I lived a very long, long time ago, back in the 1400s. When I was young, I loved to make things. I worked with shiny metal, just like a goldsmith. I would shape it and create new things with my hands. It made me so happy to build and invent.

In my time, books were very special and rare. That’s because every single book had to be written by hand with a pen and ink. It took a very, very long time to make just one book. I thought, there must be a faster way! Around the year 1440, I had a big idea. I invented a machine called a printing press. It worked like using little metal letter stamps. I could arrange the letters to make words, cover them in ink, and press them onto paper. We could make pages so much faster than writing by hand.

My printing press changed everything! Soon, we were making lots and lots of books. In 1455, we printed a very important book called the Bible. Because we could make books so quickly, more people could have them. It was wonderful! Families could read stories together. People could learn new things and share their ideas with others far away. My invention was helping the world learn and grow.

I lived a long and full life, passing away around the year 1468. My work helped spread knowledge and stories all over the world for everyone to enjoy. Today, when you pick up a book to read a story, you can remember my invention that helped make it all possible for you.
