The story

Joseph Haydn

Hello! My name is Joseph Haydn. A long, long time ago, in the year 1732, I was born in a small town in Austria. When I was a little boy, I discovered something I loved more than anything: music! My family wasn't very musical, but my heart was full of songs. I loved to sing for everyone. I even pretended a piece of wood was my violin, making happy sounds all day long.

When I grew up, I got a very special job. I worked for a kind prince named Nikolaus Esterházy. I lived in his beautiful palace, and my job was to write music to make him and his friends happy. I wrote so much music! One time, in the year 1791, I wrote a piece with a big, loud, BOOM sound. If people looked sleepy during a concert, the boom would wake them up. It always made them jump and laugh! That was my little joke.

People started calling me 'Papa Haydn' because I was like a friendly father to other musicians, helping them learn. I lived to be 77 years old, and my life ended in the year 1809. My whole life was filled with happy notes. Even today, people all over the world listen to my music when they want to feel cheerful and bright.
