The Story of Joseph Haydn
Hello, my name is Joseph Haydn. I was born in a small village in Austria a very long time ago, on March 31st, 1732. My family loved to sing, and our little house was always filled with music. I loved it more than anything. When I was just six years old, I said goodbye to my family to go study music. It was a big step for a little boy. By the time I was eight, around the year 1740, I was singing in a famous choir in the big, beautiful city of Vienna. Singing for everyone was like a dream come true.
As I grew older, my voice changed, and I could no longer sing the high notes in the choir. I had to leave, and for a while, I wasn't sure what to do. But I knew I could never give up on music. I worked very hard, and in 1761, I got a wonderful job. I became the music director for a very rich family called the Esterházys. For almost 30 years, I lived in their palace and wrote music just for them. I had my own orchestra, and we played my songs at parties and fancy concerts. It was my job to fill their home with beautiful sounds.
Soon, people all over Europe started to hear my music and they really liked it. Because I helped create new kinds of music, like the symphony, people gave me a special nickname: 'Papa Haydn'. I even became good friends with another amazing composer you may have heard of, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. I loved to have fun with my music, too. Once, I wrote my 'Surprise' Symphony. During a quiet part of the song, I added a super loud chord. BOOM. It was to make sure anyone who was getting sleepy would wake right up. In the 1790s, I took exciting trips to London, and the people there cheered for my music. It was a wonderful feeling.
My whole life was filled with music, from when I was a little boy until I was an old man. I lived to be 77 years old, and my journey ended in the year 1809. Today, people remember me as the 'Father of the Symphony' because I wrote more than 100 of them. I helped make symphonies one of the most popular kinds of music for an orchestra to play. I hope my music still brings joy and a few happy surprises to everyone who listens to it.
