The Story of King David
Hello, my name is David, and my story began in a small town called Bethlehem. I was born around the year 1040 BCE. My father’s name was Jesse, and I was the youngest of his eight sons. Because I was the youngest, my main job was to take care of our family’s sheep. I spent many long days and nights out in the open fields, watching over the flock. To pass the time, I taught myself to play the harp, and its music would drift across the hills. I also had to protect my sheep from dangerous wild animals like lions and bears. I became very good with my shepherd’s sling, learning to aim and throw stones with great accuracy. This skill was more important than I could have ever imagined at the time, and it prepared me for challenges I would face later in my life.
One day, our people, the Israelites, were in a great standoff against an army called the Philistines. The Philistines had a champion fighter who was a giant of a man named Goliath. He was so tall and strong that all of our soldiers were afraid of him. Every day, Goliath would come out and shout a challenge, daring any Israelite to fight him one-on-one. But no one was brave enough to face him. During this time, I was just a young man, and my father sent me to the army camp to bring food to my older brothers who were soldiers. When I arrived, I heard Goliath’s challenge and saw how scared everyone was. I couldn't understand why no one would fight him. I believed that with faith and courage, anything was possible. Even though I was not a soldier, I told our leader, King Saul, that I would go and fight the giant.
King Saul was hesitant to let a young shepherd face such a mighty warrior, but I explained how I had protected my sheep from wild animals. He finally agreed. I walked out to face Goliath with no armor or sword. All I carried was my shepherd’s staff, my sling, and five smooth stones I had picked from a stream. Goliath laughed when he saw me, but I was not afraid. I told him that I was there to defend my people and my faith. I put a stone in my sling, swung it around my head, and let it fly. The stone hit the giant right in the forehead, and he came crashing down to the ground. When the Philistine army saw their champion fall, they ran away, and the army of Israel won a great victory that day. This battle made me famous all across the land.
After my victory over Goliath, King Saul invited me to live in his palace. I served him by playing my harp, which seemed to soothe him when he was troubled. I also became a commander in his army and was very successful in battle. It was during this time that I formed a very special and deep friendship with the king’s son, Jonathan. He was like a brother to me. However, as I won more battles and the people began to sing songs about my victories, King Saul grew very jealous. He saw me as a threat to his throne. His jealousy became so dangerous that I had to run for my life. For many years, I had to hide in the wilderness and live as a fugitive to escape from him.
After King Saul died in battle, the path was finally cleared for me to lead our people. First, around the year 1010 BCE, my own tribe of Judah made me their king. For about seven years, I ruled only over them. But the other tribes of Israel saw my leadership, and they decided that they wanted me to be their king as well. Around the year 1003 BCE, all the tribes came together, and I became the king of a united kingdom of Israel. One of my first and most important acts as king was to capture the city of Jerusalem. It was a strong city that was difficult to conquer, but we succeeded. I made Jerusalem the capital of our new kingdom, and it became the center of our government and our worship.
I ruled as king for about 40 years. During my time as a shepherd and a king, I wrote many songs and poems to God, which you can find in the book of Psalms. These writings express joy, sadness, and great faith. I lived to be about 70 years old, and when my life ended, my wise son Solomon became the next king. Today, people remember me as a shepherd boy who became a warrior and a king. My story shows that courage can come from unexpected places and that great things can be accomplished with faith. It is a story that continues to be told in holy books all over the world.
