The Shepherd King
Hello, my name is David. When I was a boy, I lived in a town called Bethlehem. I was the youngest of all my brothers, so my job was to be a shepherd and take care of our family's sheep. Out in the fields, I learned how to be brave. Sometimes, wild animals would try to attack my flock, but I always protected them. When things were quiet, I loved to play my harp and sing songs. Many years later, people would call these special songs Psalms. One day, a prophet named Samuel came to my home. He chose me for a very important purpose, but it was a secret that I kept safe in my heart for a long time.
One of the most famous stories about me happened when I was still a young man. The army of my people, the Israelites, was facing a giant warrior named Goliath. All of King Saul's soldiers were terrified of Goliath because he was so big and strong. But I wasn't afraid. I had faith and knew that courage was more powerful than size. I didn't need heavy armor or a sword. I just took my simple slingshot and a smooth stone from a stream. I swung my sling, and the stone flew through the air and defeated the giant. Because I was brave, King Saul's army was able to win the battle that day.
Many years passed, and after King Saul was no longer the ruler, the people of Israel chose me to be their new king. This happened around the year 1010 BCE. My kingdom was made up of many different groups, called tribes, and my first big job was to bring them all together as one strong nation. To do this, we needed a special capital city that belonged to everyone. Around the year 1003 BCE, I led my soldiers and captured a city called Jerusalem. I made Jerusalem our capital, a central and special place for all of my people to share.
I was king for many years, and I always tried my best to be a fair and good leader for my people. Even as a king, I never stopped writing my songs and poems. You can still read many of them today in the Book of Psalms. I lived to be about 70 years old. My story is remembered to show how a small shepherd boy with great courage and faith can grow up to become a king. A symbol that is very important to many people, the Star of David, is named after me and it reminds people of my story even today.
