The story

King John and the Great Charter

Hello, my name is John, and I was once a prince and a king in England. My story begins a very long time ago. I was born on December 24th, 1166, to two of the most powerful people in Europe: my father, King Henry II, and my mother, Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine. As the youngest of all their sons, I wasn't expected to inherit much. Everyone believed my older brothers would receive all the land, castles, and titles. Because of this, people gave me a rather unfortunate nickname: 'John Lackland.' It felt like they were telling me I would never have anything of my own.

My older brother, Richard, was famous throughout the land. He was known as 'the Lionheart' because he was such a brave and skilled warrior. When our father passed away, Richard became the King of England. He spent much of his time away from England, fighting in great battles and leading armies. For many years, I watched from the sidelines as he ruled. But everything changed in the year 1199. When Richard passed away, it was finally my turn to take the throne. After a lifetime of being 'Lackland,' I finally had the biggest title of all: I was King of England.

Becoming king was not as easy as I had hoped. My reign was filled with troubles from the very start. I wanted to protect the lands my family held in France, so I fought many wars to keep them. Unfortunately, I was not as successful as my brother Richard. Around the year 1204, I lost many of those important territories. These wars were not only disappointing, but they were also incredibly expensive to fight. To pay for the soldiers and supplies, I had to raise a lot of money. I did this by demanding high taxes from the powerful lords in England, who were known as barons. As you can imagine, this made them very, very unhappy with me.

The angry barons grew tired of my demands for money. They decided to stand up to me and insisted we have a meeting. We met in a large, open field called Runnymede on June 15th, 1215. It was a tense and serious day. The barons presented me with a list of demands, a document of promises they wanted me to make to them and to the people of England. This document was called the Magna Carta, which is Latin for 'Great Charter.' I agreed to their terms and placed my seal on it. The most important promise in the Magna Carta was that everyone, even the king, had to follow the law. I could no longer do just whatever I wanted. It was a turning point for England.

Sadly, the peace we made at Runnymede did not last long. A terrible civil war broke out between me and the barons soon after. It was during this conflict that my life came to an end in the year 1216. I lived to be 49 years old. Many people throughout history have remembered me as an unpopular and difficult king. However, the Magna Carta, the Great Charter I sealed that day, became one of the most important documents in the entire world. Its ideas about justice and the rule of law have inspired people for hundreds of years, shaping how countries all over the globe think about fairness and the rights of citizens.
