The story

Lesya Ukrainka: A Story of Words

Hello! My real name is Larysa, but everyone calls me Lesya. I want to tell you my story. I was born a long time ago, in the year 1871. When I was a little girl living in a beautiful country called Ukraine, I loved to listen to fairy tales and songs. My mom was a writer, and our home was always filled with books and music. I learned to read very early and loved making up my own stories and playing the piano.

Sometimes I got sick and had to stay in bed, which meant I couldn't always run and play outside with my friends. But that didn't stop me from having adventures! Instead of running, I used my imagination. I picked up a pencil and started writing down all the stories and poems that were buzzing around in my head. Writing was like creating a magical world where anything could happen.

I wrote and wrote and wrote! I wrote about brave heroes, magical forests, and my love for my home, Ukraine. I wanted everyone to know how special our language and stories were. I wrote plays so that people could see my stories come to life on a stage. It made me so happy to share my words with others and see them smile.

I lived to be 42 years old, and my story on Earth ended in the year 1913. Even today, children and grown-ups in Ukraine read my poems and watch my plays. My words help them feel proud of who they are and where they come from, and that is the most wonderful story of all.
