Hello! My name is Lesya Ukrainka, which is the special name I used for my writing. My real name was Larysa Kosach, and I was born on February 25th, 1871, in a beautiful country called Ukraine. My mother, Olena Pchilka, was also a writer, so our home was always filled with books and wonderful stories. I loved learning so much that I learned how to read all by myself when I was just four years old. Besides reading, I enjoyed music, art, and learning new languages. When I was nine years old, I was so inspired that I wrote my very first poem. It was called 'Hope.' Writing felt like a magical power that let me share my feelings and ideas with the world.
When I was about ten years old, in 1881, I became sick. My illness made it hard for me to run and play outside like other children, and it meant I couldn't go to a regular school. But I decided I wouldn't let that stop my imagination from exploring. Instead of running in fields, I traveled to amazing places in my mind and through the books I read. I used my pen to write down everything I dreamed up, and words became my superpower. In 1893, I was so proud to publish my first book of poems, which I called 'On the Wings of Songs.' I wanted to show everyone that even if my body couldn't always move freely, my words and my spirit could fly anywhere they wanted to go.
I loved my country, Ukraine, with all my heart. I wanted to share its beautiful language and amazing folktales with everyone. My stories were often filled with brave heroes, magical creatures, and tales about the strength of the Ukrainian people. I wrote many poems and plays that celebrated my home. One of my most famous plays is called 'The Forest Song,' which I wrote in 1911. It’s a wonderful fairy tale about a forest spirit and is filled with magic and nature. My biggest wish was that my stories would give people courage and always remind them of how special their home was.

I lived to be 42 years old, and I filled my life with as many stories and poems as I could create. Even though my time on Earth was shorter than some, my words have lived on for a very long time. Today, children and grown-ups in Ukraine and all over the world still read my poems and watch my plays. I am remembered as someone who used the power of imagination and a deep love for her home to create art that brings hope and beauty to everyone.
