Just want Louis XIV?
Hello! My name is Louis, and I was a king of France. I was born on September 5th, 1638, and my parents, King Louis XIII and Queen Anne of Austria, were so happy to finally have a son. But my life changed very quickly. When I was only four years old, my father passed away in 1643, and suddenly, I was the new king! Of course, a little boy can't rule a whole country by himself. My clever mother, Anne, and a wise advisor named Cardinal Mazarin, helped me. They taught me everything I needed to know about being a good and strong ruler for my people.
When I grew up and Cardinal Mazarin passed away in 1661, I decided it was time for me to rule on my own. I was 22 years old and ready. I wanted everyone to know that I was in charge. I even famously said, 'L'état, c'est moi,' which means 'I am the state.' I chose the sun as my symbol because everything in France revolved around me, just like the planets revolve around the sun. That's why people started calling me the 'Sun King.' I wanted France to shine brighter than any other kingdom in the world.
A great king needs a great palace! My father had a small hunting lodge outside of Paris called Versailles. I had a much bigger idea for it. Starting around 1661, I began turning it into the most magnificent palace anyone had ever seen. It had hundreds of rooms, sparkling chandeliers, and a famous room called the Hall of Mirrors. In 1682, I moved my entire government and all the important nobles to live with me at the Palace of Versailles. It became the center of France, a dazzling symbol of my power and the beauty of our country.

I believed that a great country should also be filled with beautiful art. I loved music, theater, and especially ballet—I was quite a good dancer in my youth! I invited the best artists, writers, and musicians to my court. A funny playwright named Molière wrote plays that made everyone laugh, and a composer named Jean-Baptiste Lully created wonderful music for my parties. To make sure France would always have great artists, I started special schools, like the Royal Academy of Dance in 1661 and the French Academy of Sciences in 1666. I wanted my kingdom to be known for its culture and creativity.
I was king for a very, very long time—72 years in all, one of the longest reigns in history! I worked hard every day to make France a strong and respected nation. I lived to be 76 years old and my life came to a peaceful end on September 1st, 1715. Today, people remember me as the Sun King. They visit my beautiful Palace of Versailles and learn about the golden age of art and culture that blossomed during my time on the throne. I hope my story shows how one person's grand vision can shape a nation.
