The story

Luis Alvarez

Hello. My name is Luis Alvarez, and I was a scientist. Being a scientist is like being a detective for the world. I loved to look at things and figure out how they worked. I always asked big questions. I would ask, "How does this work?". I would also ask, "Why did that happen?". Asking questions helped me learn all about our amazing world and find answers to big puzzles.

I want to tell you about two of my favorite ideas. One was about the dinosaurs. A long, long time ago, there were big dinosaurs walking on the Earth. Then, they all disappeared. I had a big idea about why. I thought a giant asteroid from space crashed into our Earth. The crash was so big that it changed everything, and the dinosaurs went away. I also had another idea to help people. Sometimes, it is very foggy, and airplane pilots cannot see where to land. I invented a special tool that used radio waves to see through the fog. This tool, called radar, helped airplanes land safely, even when it was hard to see. It was like giving the airplane special eyes to find its way home.

I spent my whole life exploring and inventing new things. It was so much fun to discover new ideas. I lived to be 77 years old. I hope you will stay curious, just like I did. Always ask questions about the world around you. Asking questions is the best way to learn new things and help make our world a better and safer place for everyone.
