The story

Luis Alvarez: A Life of Discovery

Hello! My name is Luis Alvarez. I was a scientist and an inventor, which means I spent my life asking big questions and trying to figure out the answers. I was born on June 13th, 1911, in a sunny city called San Francisco, California. Ever since I was a little boy, I loved to tinker with things and see how they worked. My mind was always buzzing with new ideas!

When I grew up, I went to a big school called the University of Chicago to study science. I loved it! I learned all about physics, which is the science of how everything in the world moves and works, from the tiniest specks of dust to the biggest stars. In 1936, after I finished school, I became a professor at the University of California, Berkeley. I got to work in a laboratory with other scientists, doing experiments and making exciting discoveries about the tiny, invisible particles that make up our whole universe.

Besides being a scientist, I was also an inventor. During a very big war, called World War II, I used my science skills to help my country. One of the things I helped invent was a special kind of radar that could help airplanes land safely, even when it was cloudy or foggy. It felt good to know my ideas could help keep people safe. Later, for my work discovering new things about tiny particles, I won a very special award. In 1968, I was given the Nobel Prize in Physics. It was a very proud day!

When I was older, I worked on solving one of the biggest mysteries of all time: what happened to the dinosaurs? My son, Walter, who was a geologist—a scientist who studies rocks—found a strange layer of clay in the earth. Together, we studied it. In 1980, we announced our big idea. We believed that a giant asteroid from space crashed into Earth millions of years ago, and that this big event caused the dinosaurs to disappear. It was a huge discovery that changed how we think about the history of our planet!

I lived to be 77 years old, and my life was full of curiosity and adventure. Today, people remember me as a scientist who was always asking questions and looking for answers, from the smallest particles in the universe to the biggest dinosaurs that ever lived. I hope my story inspires you to stay curious and keep asking big questions, too!
