Just want Lumière brothers?
Bonjour! We are the Lumière brothers, Auguste and Louis. We grew up in a city called Lyon in France. Our father, Antoine, had a photography business, and we loved helping him. We were fascinated by pictures and how they captured a single moment in time. We spent all our time together, imagining and inventing new things that no one had ever seen before.
We always wondered, what if we could make pictures move? We didn't just want to see one moment; we wanted to capture life just as it happened, with all its wonderful motion. So, in 1895, we worked together day and night to create a very special machine. We called it the Cinématographe. It was an amazing invention because it was a camera, a printer, and a projector all in one little box! It was also light enough for us to carry anywhere, which meant we could film things happening outside of our workshop.
Our very first film was a simple one. It showed workers leaving our family's factory at the end of the day. On December 28th, 1895, we did something very exciting. We invited people to a room in the Grand Café in Paris to see what we had made. We set up our Cinématographe and pointed it at a plain white wall. When we turned it on, suddenly, the pictures started to move! People in the room gasped and then they began to cheer. They had never seen anything like it in their entire lives. It truly felt like magic was happening right in front of them.
That little movie show was the start of something huge—the cinema! We continued inventing and even created an early way to take color photographs. We both lived long and happy lives filled with discovery and creation. I, Louis, lived to be 83 years old, and my brother Auguste lived to be 91. Our dream was to capture moments in time so everyone could share them, and now, every time you watch a movie, you are seeing a part of our dream come to life.
