Just want Martha Graham?
Hello, my name is Martha Graham, and I loved to dance. I was born on May 11th, 1894. My father was a doctor, and he taught me that our bodies show how we feel on the inside. When I was a teenager, around the year 1911, I saw a dancer named Ruth St. Denis. Watching her was like magic, and I knew right then that dancing was what I wanted to do with my life.
In 1916, I went to a special school called the Denishawn School of Dancing to learn. But I had my own ideas. I wanted to create a new kind of dance that showed every feeling—happy, sad, and even angry. I invented a style called the 'Graham technique.' It was based on breathing in and out, using movements I called 'contraction and release.' It wasn't like the light, floaty ballet dancing people were used to. My dancing was strong and came from deep inside. In 1926, I started my own group in New York City, the Martha Graham Dance Company, to share my new ideas with the world.
I loved creating my own dances, which are called choreographies. Each one told a special story without using any words. One of my most famous dances, from 1944, was called 'Appalachian Spring.' It told the story of pioneers building a new home. My dancing took me to amazing places. In 1937, I became the first dancer to ever perform at the White House for the president. I kept dancing and creating for almost my whole life because it was my favorite way to share stories.
I lived a long and exciting life, filled with movement, for 96 years. Today, people remember me as a pioneer who changed dance forever. My special style, the Graham technique, is still taught to dancers all over the world. I hope my story shows you that there are many ways to express your feelings and that you can always find your own unique way to move through the world.
