Hello, I am Menkaure, and I was a pharaoh in the incredible land of ancient Egypt. I lived a very, very long time ago during a period historians now call the Old Kingdom. You may have heard of my family, as we are known for building some of the most amazing structures in the world. My grandfather was the great pharaoh Khufu, who built the Great Pyramid of Giza. My father, Khafre, built the second magnificent pyramid right next to it, along with the mysterious Great Sphinx that watches over the sands. I followed in their footsteps, but I chose to walk my own path.
My journey as pharaoh began around the year 2532 BCE. The stories passed down through time said that my father and grandfather were very strict rulers. I wanted my reign to be remembered differently. I listened to my people and ruled with fairness. I was known as a just and pious king, which means I deeply respected the gods and our sacred traditions. To show this, one of the first things I did was reopen the temples across Egypt that had been closed. I wanted everyone to be able to honor the gods and feel connected to our culture.
My greatest project was building my own pyramid at Giza, a final resting place for my journey into the afterlife. I started its construction around 2530 BCE. While my pyramid is the third and smallest of the great pyramids, I made sure it was special and beautiful in its own way. I wanted it to be unique, so I ordered the lower part of it to be covered in a stunning red granite. This stone was very heavy and had to be brought from quarries far to the south, which was a difficult task. This pyramid was more than just a building; it was my 'house for eternity,' a sacred monument designed to protect my body and spirit for all time.

During my time as pharaoh, my kingdom was filled with talented artists who created breathtaking works of art that have lasted for thousands of years. They carved incredible, lifelike statues of me from stone. Some of these statues show me standing proudly with my beloved queen, Khamerernebty II. In other statues, I am standing with the powerful goddesses of Egypt, who were believed to protect the pharaoh. These beautiful statues were not just for decoration. They were placed inside my temples to honor the gods and to ensure that my spirit, my ka, would have a home and live on forever.
My time as pharaoh came to an end around 2503 BCE, but my story continued. Even today, thousands of years later, my pyramid still stands tall at Giza next to those of my father and grandfather. It is a monument visited by people from all over the world who want to see the wonders of ancient Egypt. The statues my artists so carefully crafted are now treasured in museums, where they continue to tell the story of my life, my queen, and the amazing civilization I was proud to lead. My legacy is carved in stone, a reminder of a king who honored both his people and his gods.
