The story

Michael Faraday

Hello! My name is Michael Faraday. I was born in a little town just outside of London, England, way back on September 22nd, 1791. My family didn't have much money, so I couldn't stay in school for very long. When I was 14 years old, I started a job as a bookbinder's apprentice. My job was to stitch pages together to make books, but my favorite part was reading them! I especially loved books about science. They were filled with amazing ideas about the world, and I wanted to learn everything.

One day in 1812, I got tickets to see a famous scientist named Humphry Davy give lectures. It was the most exciting thing I had ever seen! I wrote down everything he said and drew pictures of his experiments. I took all my notes and bound them into a beautiful book. Then, I did something very brave—I sent the book to Mr. Davy and asked if I could be his helper. And guess what? He said yes! In 1813, I started working as his assistant at a famous science place called the Royal Institution. My dream of becoming a scientist was starting to come true.

At the Royal Institution, I got to do experiments all day. I was fascinated by the invisible forces of electricity and magnetism. I wondered if they were connected. In 1821, I did an experiment where I used electricity and a magnet to make a wire spin around and around all by itself. It might not sound like much, but it was the world's very first electric motor! Ten years later, in 1831, I made another amazing discovery. I found that I could create electricity just by moving a magnet inside a coil of wire. This is called electromagnetic induction, and it's the idea that we still use to make most of the electricity that powers our homes and schools today.

I loved science so much that I wanted everyone to love it, especially children. In 1825, I started giving special Christmas Lectures about science for young people, a tradition that continues even now. I lived to be 75 years old, and I never stopped being curious. Today, people remember me for my discoveries that helped light up the world and get it moving with electricity. I hope my story shows you that it doesn't matter where you come from—if you are curious and work hard, you can change the world.
