Michelangelo: The Story of an Artist
Hello! My name is Michelangelo, and I was an artist. I loved to make beautiful things. When I was a little boy, I did not play with regular toys like other children. Instead, I loved to draw pictures and make things with my own hands. My most favorite thing to do was to take big blocks of stone and carve them. I would chip away at the stone until it turned into amazing shapes and figures. It was so much fun. It felt just like magic to see a statue appear from a plain block of stone!
As I grew up, I got to make some very big and very special art for everyone to see. One time, I carved a giant statue of a hero. His name was David, and he was so tall and strong! He stood up high for everyone to look at. Another time, a very important person called the Pope asked me to do something special. He wanted me to paint a ceiling, way up high inside a big building. To paint it, I had to lie on my back on a tall platform, close to the sky. I painted lots and lots of colorful pictures up there. It took a long, long time to finish all the paintings. I worked for years, but when it was all done, it was so beautiful.
I made art for my whole life because it was what I loved to do. I lived to be 88 years old. Today, many years later, people from all over the world still come to see my art. They visit and look up at the painted ceiling and stand next to the big statue of David. My art helps tell important stories from long ago. It shows everyone how you can make wonderful and beautiful things with just your hands and your imagination.
