Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi: The Man Who Loved Numbers

Hello! My name is Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi. That’s a long name, I know! You can call me al-Khwarizmi. I was born a very long time ago, around the year 780, in a land that is now part of a country called Uzbekistan. Even when I was a little boy, I was fascinated by the world around me. I especially loved numbers and puzzles. I would look at the stars in the night sky and wonder how they moved, and I loved figuring out tricky problems. To me, numbers weren't just for counting—they were clues to understanding the secrets of the universe!

When I grew up, I traveled to a magnificent city called Baghdad. It was one of the biggest and busiest cities in the world! The ruler of the city, Caliph al-Ma’mun, loved learning and invited smart people from all over to come and study. Around the year 820, I got to work at a very special place there called the House of Wisdom. It wasn't just a library; it was a giant school filled with thousands of books and brilliant scholars. We shared ideas, studied ancient scrolls, and worked together to make new discoveries in science, astronomy, and, my favorite, mathematics. It was the most exciting place a curious person like me could ever hope to be!

At the House of Wisdom, I had some big ideas. I saw that people were struggling with certain kinds of math problems, like figuring out how to divide land fairly. So, I wrote a book to make it easier. My book described a new method, like a set of rules for a game, to find a missing number in a puzzle. This new way of thinking was called 'al-jabr,' and today, you know it by the name 'algebra'! I also helped introduce a wonderful set of numbers that came from India, including the amazing number zero! These are the same numbers—0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9—that you use in school every day.

I lived a long and happy life filled with discovery and passed away around the year 850. Even though I am no longer there, my ideas live on. The step-by-step way I taught people to solve problems is called an 'algorithm'—a word that comes from my own name! Every time you use a computer, play a video game, or watch a cartoon on a tablet, you are using algorithms that started with my ideas. I am so happy that my love for puzzles and numbers still helps people solve problems and create amazing things all over the world.
