Just want Otto Lilienthal?
Hello! My name is Otto Lilienthal, and ever since I was a boy, I dreamed of flying. I was born in a town called Anklam, Germany, way back in 1848. My brother, Gustav, and I would spend hours watching the big, graceful storks soar through the sky. We wondered, 'If birds can fly, why can't people?'. That one question started me on a lifelong adventure.
I knew the secret to flight was hidden in the shape of a bird's wings. For years, I studied them carefully. In 1889, I even wrote a book about it. Then, it was time to build. Using lightweight willow wood and strong cotton cloth, I started constructing my very own wings, which we call gliders. In 1891, I was finally ready. I ran to the top of a hill, took a deep breath, and leaped into the air.
It worked. I was flying. I wasn't just flapping my arms; I was gliding on the wind, just like the storks I had watched as a boy. I learned to steer by shifting my body. I built many different gliders and made over 2,000 flights. People started calling me the 'Glider King.' Every time I soared from a hilltop, I proved that humans could ride the air.
My experiments were exciting, but also dangerous. During a flight in 1896, a sudden gust of wind caused my glider to crash, and my journey came to an end. I lived to be 48 years old. But my dream didn't stop. My work showed everyone that human flight was possible and inspired many others, including the famous Wright brothers, who went on to build the first airplane. My dream helped give the whole world wings.
