The story

Paul Gauguin

Hello! My name is Paul Gauguin, and I was a painter who loved to fill my canvases with bright, wonderful colors. I was born in a big city called Paris, France, on June 7th, 1848. Even though I was born in a city, my heart always dreamed of faraway places, and I loved adventure. When I was just a little boy, my family moved all the way across the ocean to a country called Peru, which was a very different and exciting place!

When I grew up, I didn't become a painter right away. First, I had a job in an office as a stockbroker. I was good at it, but I spent all my free time painting. It was my favorite thing to do! Around the year 1882, I made a big decision. I decided to follow my heart and become a full-time artist. It was a little scary, but so exciting! For a little while in 1888, I even lived and painted with my friend, another artist you may know named Vincent van Gogh. We loved talking about art and colors.

I loved Paris, but I wanted to paint things that no one had ever seen before. I dreamed of a place with warm sunshine, colorful flowers, and bright blue water. In 1891, I sailed far across the sea to an island called Tahiti. It was just as beautiful as I had imagined! I used the brightest yellows, greens, and pinks to paint the people and the beautiful nature all around me. I didn't try to make my paintings look exactly like a photograph. Instead, I used colors and shapes to show how the island made me feel—happy, peaceful, and full of wonder.

I lived to be 54 years old, spending my later years on the beautiful islands that inspired me so much. Today, people can see my paintings in museums all over the world. They remember me for using bold, beautiful colors and for showing that art can be a window into our dreams and feelings. I hope my art reminds you to look for the color and adventure in your own life!
