The story

Pedro II: The Kind Emperor of Brazil

Hello. My name is Pedro, and I was the emperor of a big country called Brazil. I was born a long, long time ago, on December 2nd, 1825. When I was just a little boy, only five years old, I became the leader of my country. That was in the year 1831. It was a very big job for a little boy, but I was ready to learn and help my country.

I loved to learn new things. I read many, many books. I learned all about science and looked at beautiful art. Because I loved learning so much, I wanted all the children in Brazil to learn, too. I wanted to build lots of schools for them. I was the emperor for a very long time, for more than 50 years, and I kept learning every single day.

The most important thing to me was being fair to everyone. I wanted all the people in my country to be happy and safe. I was so happy when a new rule was made in the year 1888. It was called the Golden Law. This new rule meant that all the people in Brazil were finally free.

I lived a long life and grew to be 66 years old. I passed away in the year 1891. People remember me as an emperor who was kind. They remember that I loved my country and wanted every single person to be free and have a chance to go to school.
