A Story from Pericles
Hello. My name is Pericles. I lived a very, very long time ago. I was born in the year 495 BCE in a sunny city in Greece called Athens. Athens was my home, and I loved it very much. I loved all the people who lived there, and I wanted to make our city the best place it could be for everyone.
I had a big idea to make Athens the most beautiful city in the whole world. I helped my friends build amazing new buildings that were strong and lovely to look at. We wanted everyone to enjoy them. My very favorite building was a special temple we built on a big hill. We called it the Parthenon. We started building it in the year 447 BCE, and it was made to be a special place for all the people of Athens.
Making our city beautiful was important, but I also wanted to make it a fair place to live. I believed that everyone should have a say in how things are run in our city. We called this idea democracy. It means that everyone’s voice matters. This idea helped all of us work together and made Athens a strong and happy home for families to live in.
I lived to be about 66 years old and passed away in the year 429 BCE. Even though I lived a long, long time ago, people still remember me. They remember the beautiful buildings I helped create and my ideas about fairness that helped show the world how people can live together happily. My work helped make the world a better place.
