Pericles: The Builder of Athens
Hello! My name is Pericles. I want to tell you the story of my life in the amazing city of Athens. I was born around the year 495 BCE into a family that was well-known and respected. From a very young age, I was fascinated by big ideas. I loved listening to philosophers, who were the great thinkers of my time, and I was surrounded by artists and musicians. I grew up believing that our city, Athens, was special. We had a new idea called 'demokratia,' or democracy, which meant that the people had the power to rule. This idea excited me more than anything, and I knew I wanted to spend my life helping it grow.
When I was old enough, around the year 461 BCE, I stepped into the world of politics. My main goal was to make our democracy stronger, so that every citizen, rich or poor, could have a voice in how our city was run. One of my most important ideas was to pay people for serving in public office. Before this, only wealthy men could afford to leave their jobs to participate in government. Now, a farmer or a craftsman could serve on a jury or in the assembly without worrying about his family going hungry. Starting in 443 BCE, the people of Athens elected me as one of their 'strategoi,' or generals, and they kept re-electing me for many years. It was a great honor, and I worked hard to be a leader who was guided by reason and a love for our city.
I also had a grand vision for Athens. I wanted it to be the most beautiful and culturally rich city in all of Greece—an education for the world! Years before, the city had been badly damaged in a war with the Persian Empire. Now, it was time to rebuild. In 447 BCE, we began a massive building project on the Acropolis, the high rocky hill in the center of our city. We built incredible temples to honor our gods and show the glory of Athens. The most famous of these was the Parthenon, a temple dedicated to the goddess Athena, our city's protector. I invited the best artists, architects, and sculptors, like my friend Phidias, to create these masterpieces. Our city became a hub of learning and creativity, a place where playwrights, historians, and philosophers gathered. This time is often called the 'Age of Pericles' because of all the wonderful things we accomplished.
Unfortunately, our success made other Greek city-states, especially Sparta, very nervous. Their way of life was very different from ours, and they saw our power as a threat. In 431 BCE, the Peloponnesian War began between Athens and Sparta and their allies. My strategy was to use our powerful navy to our advantage and to have all the people from the countryside move inside the city's protective walls. But this led to a new disaster. In 430 BCE, with so many people crowded together, a terrible plague swept through Athens. It was a time of great sadness and loss for our city. I lost many friends, and even my two beloved sons, to the sickness.
The plague eventually took me as well, and my life came to an end in the year 429 BCE. I lived to be about 66 years old. Though my life ended during a dark time for Athens, I hope that I am remembered for the brighter days. I spent my life fighting for the idea that ordinary people could govern themselves with wisdom and fairness. I helped make Athens a place of breathtaking beauty and brilliant ideas. Even today, thousands of years later, people from all over the world visit the ruins of the Parthenon. They come to admire what we built, and they study our ideas about democracy. I hope my story shows that one person, with a great love for their city and its people, can help build something that lasts forever.
