Pericles: The Builder of Athens
Hello! My name is Pericles, and I lived a very long time ago in a beautiful city called Athens, in a land we now call Greece. I was born around the year 495 BCE. Even as a boy, I loved my city. I loved seeing the bustling marketplace, hearing the brilliant thinkers share their ideas, and looking up at the high hill in the center of town called the Acropolis. I dreamed of making Athens the greatest city in the world.
When I grew up, I became a general and a leader for Athens, starting around the year 461 BCE. My most important idea was something called 'democracy.' That’s a big word that means 'rule by the people.' I believed that everyone, not just the rich and powerful, should have a say in how our city was run. I wanted every citizen to be able to share their ideas and vote on our laws. I thought this was the fairest way for everyone to live together and help our city shine.
I also wanted Athens to be the most beautiful city in the world. I asked my friends, who were amazing artists and builders, to help me. Together, we started a huge project to build magnificent temples and buildings all over the city. Our most famous project began in the year 447 BCE. It was a grand temple on top of the Acropolis called the Parthenon, built to honor our city's special goddess, Athena. We used shining white marble, and my friend, the sculptor Phidias, created amazing statues to decorate it. It felt like we were building a city for the gods!
Our city became a wonderful place for art, learning, and new ideas. People now call this time the 'Golden Age of Athens.' Later in my life, our city faced hard times, including a war that started in 431 BCE and a terrible sickness. I lived to be about 66 years old and passed away in the year 429 BCE. Even though my life ended, I am so proud of what we accomplished. The ideas about democracy that I helped grow and the beautiful buildings like the Parthenon are still remembered thousands of years later. They show the world what amazing things people can do when they work together.
