The story

The Hill of Stories

From high above the city, I can see everything. Little white houses spread out like sugar cubes, and the sun makes the distant sea sparkle. A warm breeze tickles my stones. My white marble glows as if I have a secret light inside me. I am a rocky hill, a special stage for some of the most beautiful buildings you have ever seen. People climb my slopes every single day to see what stories I hold. I am the Acropolis of Athens, and I have many stories to tell.

My most exciting story began a very, very long time ago, in the 5th century BCE. A wise leader named Pericles had a big dream for me. He wanted to make me the most wonderful place in the world, a crown for the city of Athens. So, the cleverest builders and artists got to work. In the year 447 BCE, they started building my most famous temple, the Parthenon. It was a gift for Athena, the goddess of wisdom who protected the city. Inside, there was once a giant, dazzling statue of her covered in shiny gold and smooth ivory. It must have been an amazing sight. My builders also created a grand gateway called the Propylaea to welcome visitors. And they built a special temple called the Erechtheion, which has a porch held up not by plain columns, but by beautiful statues of maidens.

I have watched the world change for thousands of years. After my golden age, I wasn't just a place for temples. I became a strong fortress to protect the city, and people even lived here. My stones have seen sunny days and scary storms. They have been damaged and carefully repaired over many centuries. A very sad thing happened on September 26th, 1687. There was a big explosion during a battle, and it hurt my beautiful Parthenon very badly. But even in ruins, people knew I was important. After Greece became its own country again in the 1800s, people started working hard to protect my ancient stones and put them back together again.

Today, I am a treasure for the whole world. In 1987, I was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which means everyone has promised to take care of me. I love feeling the footsteps of visitors from so many different countries who come to walk among my columns and hear my stories. I am a reminder of big ideas like art and fairness that started right here. I hope that when you see me, you feel inspired to build, create, and dream big, just like the people who made me so long ago.
