The story

The Sunny Hill of Athens

I stand tall on my rocky hill. Below me is a busy, happy city. The sky is so blue, and the sun feels warm on my stones. I love to watch my friends, the people, walk up my paths to say hello. They smile when they see me. Hello. I am the Acropolis of Athens, a very special city on a hill in a country called Greece. I have been here for a very, very long time.

The people of Athens built me a long, long time ago, in the 5th century BCE. They wanted to make a beautiful place for their special friend, a goddess named Athena. They were very clever builders. They used big blocks of shiny white marble, like giant, sparkly sugar cubes. They stacked them up, up, up to make amazing temples. The biggest one is called the Parthenon, and they started building it in the year 447 BCE. They made tall, strong columns to hold up the roof and carved pretty pictures into the stone. It was a happy and busy time.

My stones are very old now, but I am still strong. I love when new friends come to visit me from all over the world. They look up at my tall columns and take pictures. I think they can feel all the happy stories I hold inside me. I love sharing my sunshine and my story with everyone. I am here to show you that when people work together, they can make wonderful, beautiful things that last for a very, very long time.
