Just want Prince Henry the Navigator?
Hello! My name is Henry, and I was a prince in a country called Portugal a very long time ago. I was born on March 4th, 1394. Even though I lived in a castle, my favorite thing to think about was the big, wide ocean. I would listen to sailors tell stories about faraway lands and imagine all the amazing things that were waiting to be discovered beyond the waves.
When I was a young man, I went on an adventure of my own. In the year 1415, I traveled to a city in Africa called Ceuta. Seeing this new part of the world made me even more curious. I had a big dream: I wanted to send brave sailors to explore the coasts of Africa and find new sea routes to other places. To make my dream happen, I gathered the best mapmakers, shipbuilders, and sailors I could find. We all worked together in a sunny part of Portugal to plan amazing voyages into the unknown.
Back then, many people were afraid to sail too far down the coast of Africa. They told scary stories about a place called Cape Bojador, calling it the 'Sea of Darkness'. They believed the water there boiled and sea monsters lived in the deep. But I knew that with better ships and braver captains, we could do it. We helped design a special new kind of ship called a caravel. It was lighter and faster, perfect for exploring. Finally, in 1434, one of my captains, Gil Eanes, sailed right past Cape Bojador and came back safely. Everyone cheered. After that, my ships sailed farther and farther, mapping new lands and islands.
I was never a king, but people gave me a special name: Henry the Navigator. I lived to be 66 years old and passed away in the year 1460. But my work didn't end then. The maps my sailors made and the courage they showed helped other explorers, many years later, to sail even farther. I'm remembered for helping to start a great Age of Discovery that changed the world map forever.
