The story

The Story of Muhammad

Hello, my name is Muhammad. I was born a long, long time ago in the year 570, in a busy city called Mecca. When I was very little, my parents passed away, so I became an orphan. First, my kind grandfather, Abd al-Muttalib, took care of me. After he passed away, my loving uncle, Abu Talib, raised me. As a boy, I was a shepherd, and I watched over the sheep in the fields. As I grew up, people knew I was very honest. They gave me a special nickname, 'Al-Amin,' which means the trustworthy one, because I always told the truth and could be trusted with anything.

I loved finding quiet places where I could think all by myself. I would often go to a special cave on a mountain called Hira. It was a peaceful place to be. One day, in the year 610, something amazing happened while I was in the cave. An angel named Jibril appeared. He is also known as Gabriel. The angel brought me a very important message from God, who is called Allah in the Arabic language. The message was for all people. It was to tell everyone to be kind to each other, to share what they have with people in need, and to believe in one God who created the whole world.

After the angel visited me, the very first person I told was my wonderful wife, Khadijah. She listened to my story and believed me right away. Her kindness gave me courage. I started to share God’s message with my closest friends and my family, and then I began sharing it with everyone. This message of peace and kindness is called Islam. Not everyone in Mecca liked this new message, so in the year 622, we moved to a new city called Medina. There, we were safe and could build a happy community where everyone was taught to be caring and fair.

I spent the rest of my life teaching people about being good to one another and living in peace. I lived to be about 62 years old. Today, many people all around the world are called Muslims, and they follow the message of peace and love that I shared so long ago. My story is remembered to help everyone think about being kind, honest, and helpful to others.
