The Story of Muhammad

Hello, my name is Muhammad, and I want to share my story with you. I was born in a bustling city called Mecca, in the Arabian Peninsula, around the year 570. My early life was not easy. My father passed away before I was born, and my mother died when I was very young, so I grew up as an orphan. First, my kind grandfather, Abd al-Muttalib, took care of me, and after he passed, my loving uncle, Abu Talib, raised me as his own. As a boy, I worked as a shepherd, watching over flocks of sheep in the hills outside the city. This quiet work gave me a lot of time to think. When I grew older, I became a merchant and traveled with caravans to faraway places, buying and selling goods. I always treated people fairly in my business dealings, and because of my honesty, people gave me special nicknames. They called me Al-Amin, which means 'the trustworthy,' and Al-Sadiq, which means 'the truthful.' It was during this time that I met a respected businesswoman named Khadija. We were married, and she was a wonderful partner and friend to me.

As I got older, I felt a deep need to find a quiet place to think and pray. I often went to a peaceful cave on a mountain called Jabal al-Nour, which means 'Mountain of Light.' It was a place where I could be alone with my thoughts. One night in the year 610, when I was about 40 years old, something happened that changed my life forever. While I was in the cave, the Angel Gabriel, who is called Jibril in Arabic, appeared before me. He came with a message from God. The angel’s voice was powerful, and he said to me, 'Recite!'. He then shared with me the first words of what would later become the holy book for Muslims, the Quran. I was startled and hurried home, my heart pounding. I told my wife, Khadija, what had happened. She listened carefully, comforted me, and wrapped a warm blanket around me. She was the very first person to believe in the message I had received, and her faith gave me strength.

After that night, I understood the message I was chosen to share. It was a simple but very important truth: there is only one God, who created the entire universe. This message also taught that people should be kind to one another, generous to the poor, and fair in everything they do. For the first few years, I shared these teachings only with my family and my closest friends. My young cousin, Ali, and my dear friend, Abu Bakr, were among the first to believe. Then, around the year 613, I felt it was time to share the message publicly with all the people of Mecca. I stood on a hillside and spoke about the oneness of God and the importance of living a good life. But not everyone was happy to hear this. Many of the powerful leaders in Mecca believed in worshiping many different idols made of stone and wood. They did not like my message about equality for all people, because it challenged their traditions and their power.

As I continued to share my message, life in Mecca became very difficult for me and for those who chose to follow the new faith of Islam. We were often treated unkindly. After several years of hardship, we knew we needed to find a new home where we could practice our beliefs in peace. In the year 622, my followers and I made a long and historic journey north to a city called Medina. This journey is known in history as the Hijra. It was such a major turning point that it marks the very beginning of the Islamic calendar. In Medina, the people welcomed us with open arms. There, I helped build a new community based on the principles of our faith. We created a society where people from different tribes and backgrounds could live together in peace, cooperation, and respect for one another.

After several years in Medina, in the year 630, we were able to return to Mecca peacefully, and the city embraced the message of one God. I continued my life's work of teaching and guiding the community. I lived to be about 63 years old and passed away in the year 632 in the city of Medina, where I was buried. The messages and revelations I had received from God throughout my life were carefully written down and collected into the holy book called the Quran. My life was dedicated to sharing the message of Islam, a faith built on peace, submission to God, and compassion for all people. Today, that message continues to guide and inspire millions of Muslims all around the world.
