Rani Lakshmibai
Hello! My name is Rani Lakshmibai, but when I was a little girl, everyone called me Manu. I was born on November 19th, 1828. Growing up was an adventure for me. While some girls played with dolls, I had other interests that I found very exciting. I loved learning how to ride horses, and I felt so free with the wind in my hair. I also practiced how to shoot arrows and even learned to fight with a sword. It was so much fun to be active and strong, and I always felt proud when I learned a new skill. My childhood was full of energy and lessons that would help me later in life.
In the year 1842, I married the wonderful king of a place called Jhansi. That is when I became a queen, or a 'Rani.' I loved my new home and cared deeply for all the people in my kingdom. My husband and I had a baby boy, but he passed away when he was very young, which made us very sad. To make sure our kingdom would have a prince, we later adopted another son named Damodar Rao. We loved him very much. But soon after, in 1853, the king also passed away. Suddenly, it was up to me to protect our kingdom and our son's future.
Some powerful people from a group called the British East India Company wanted to take our kingdom of Jhansi away from us. They did not think I should be in charge. I knew I could not let that happen. When a big fight called the Great Rebellion started in 1857, I knew it was time for me to be a leader for my people. I decided to fight for my home. I put on a soldier's uniform and rode my favorite horse into battle to lead my army. I was determined to protect Jhansi. In one big battle, I even escaped with my son Damodar safely tied to my back! I wanted to show everyone that I would do anything to keep my family and my people safe.
I fought bravely for freedom until my final battle in 1858. I lived to be 29 years old. Today, people all over India remember me as a strong and courageous queen who stood up for what was right. My story is often told to show that anyone can be a hero and fight for their home, no matter who they are. I hope my story inspires you to be brave in your own life.
