Sarojini Naidu: The Nightingale of India

Hello! My name is Sarojini Naidu. I was born in a beautiful city called Hyderabad in India on February 13th, 1879. Even when I was a little girl, I loved words more than anything else. I would write poems about the sparkling rivers, colorful birds, and busy markets I saw all around me. My family was very proud of my writing. They always encouraged me to keep learning and creating with my words.

When I was just a teenager, I sailed all the way to England to go to school. It was a very big adventure for me. Even though I was far from home, I kept writing poems about my beloved homeland, India. In 1905, I published my very first book of poems, which was called 'The Golden Threshold.' People loved reading the poems so much that they gave me a special nickname. They called me the Nightingale of India, because they said my words were as beautiful as a songbird's song.

Besides writing poems, I wanted to help my country. At that time, India was ruled by Great Britain, and many of us dreamed of being free and independent. I joined many other brave people, including my good friend Mahatma Gandhi, to work for India's freedom. I traveled all over the country, giving speeches to encourage everyone to work together peacefully. My work was very important to me. In 1925, I was chosen to be the president of a group called the Indian National Congress. I was very proud because I was the first Indian woman to have that important job.

After many years of hard work, India finally became a free country in 1947. I was so happy to see our dream come true. After that, I became the governor of a large state, which allowed me to help lead the new India. I lived to be 70 years old, and my life was full of both poetry and purpose. Today, people remember me not just for my songs and poems, but for being a strong voice who helped her country find its own voice, too.
