The story

Ernest Shackleton: A Big Adventure

Hello! My name is Ernest Shackleton, and I have always loved big adventures. When I was a boy, I dreamed of sailing on big ships to faraway places. My favorite place to dream about was the coldest, snowiest, and iciest place on the whole planet: Antarctica! It's right at the very bottom of the world.

For my biggest adventure in 1914, I got a special boat called the Endurance. It was a strong wooden ship, perfect for sailing through chilly waters. My friends and I sailed all the way to Antarctica. But the ice there was very thick, like a giant frozen puddle. Our ship got stuck! The ice pushed and squeezed our boat until it broke. Oh no! But I wasn't scared. I was the leader, and I had a very important job to do.

My most important job was to make sure all my friends were safe. Even though our big ship was gone, we had small lifeboats. We lived on the ice for a while and then sailed our little boats across the stormy sea to find help. I promised my crew that we would all get home, and we did! Every single one of my friends made it back safely.

I lived to be 47 years old and had many amazing adventures exploring the world. People remember me not just for my journeys, but for being a leader who never gave up and always took care of his team. It's always most important to help your friends.
