Just want Sir Leonard Woolley?
Hello! My name is Leonard Woolley. I was born a long, long time ago, in the year 1880. When I was a boy, I loved stories about adventures and finding hidden things. When I grew up, I became something called an archaeologist. That’s a big word, but it just means I was like a treasure hunter for history! Instead of looking for gold chests, I looked for old cities that were buried under the sand a long, long time ago. I wanted to find their stories.
My biggest adventure started in the year 1922. I went to a hot, sandy place that is now a country called Iraq. My team and I started to dig in the sand. We dug with shovels, and we dug with brushes. We dug, and we dug, and we dug some more. Can you guess what we found? We discovered a whole city sleeping under the ground! It was a very old city called Ur. Finding it felt like opening a giant storybook from the past. It was so exciting to see something that no one had seen for thousands of years.
Inside the city of Ur, we found so many amazing things. These discoveries showed us how people lived thousands of years ago. We found beautiful jewelry made of shiny stones and pretty beads. We found fancy musical instruments that people played to make music. We even found board games that families played together for fun! These weren't just old objects; they were clues that told us stories about families, kings, and queens from a time long, long before we were born.
I kept looking for stories from the past for many years and passed away in 1960. I lived to be 79 years old, and I spent my life uncovering secrets from long ago. People remember me because the things I found in Ur helped us understand so much about the ancient world. It shows us that even if something is lost or buried, its story is never truly gone.
