The story

Sir Leonard Woolley: A History Detective

Hello! My name is Sir Leonard Woolley, and I was an archaeologist. That’s a fancy word for a history detective! I was born in England on June 17th, 1880. Instead of looking for clues to solve mysteries from today, I looked for clues to understand how people lived thousands of years ago. I would travel to faraway places and carefully dig in the dirt to uncover ancient cities and forgotten treasures. My job was to piece together the stories of the past, one discovery at a time.

My biggest and most exciting adventure began in 1922. My team and I traveled to a hot, sandy place in modern-day Iraq. We were looking for a lost city called Ur. For many years, Ur was just a name in old books, but I was sure we could find it. We had to be very patient. We started digging very, very carefully into the ground. We used soft brushes and small shovels to slowly sweep away the sand and dirt. We were hoping to find a wall, a piece of pottery, or anything that would tell us we were in the right place.

And we found it! After a lot of hard work, we uncovered the ancient city of Ur. The most amazing part was discovering the Royal Tombs. These were special burial places for kings and queens from long, long ago. Inside, we found incredible treasures made of gold and sparkling jewels. One of the most beautiful things we found was a golden headdress that belonged to a queen named Puabi. We also found a statue of a ram caught in a thicket and a special box called the Standard of Ur. This box had pictures on it that told stories about war and peace. My wife, Katharine, was an artist, and she helped me by drawing pictures of everything we found. She also helped put together the fragile pieces so we could see what they looked like.

For my work, I was made a knight in 1935, which is why people call me Sir Leonard Woolley. It was a great honor. The treasures we found in Ur showed the world how clever and creative the ancient Sumerian people were. I lived to be 79 years old, and I was so happy to share my discoveries with everyone. Today, you can see many of the amazing things we found in museums around the world. They help us tell the story of a world from long, long ago, and that’s a treasure that belongs to everyone.
