Hello! My name is Walter Scott, and I have a great love for stories. I was born in the beautiful city of Edinburgh, Scotland, on August 15th, 1771. When I was just a little boy, I became very ill with polio. This sickness left my right leg with a permanent limp, which meant I couldn't run and play like the other children. Instead of feeling sad, I found a different kind of adventure. I spent my days reading every book I could get my hands on. I also loved listening to my grandmother and aunt tell me thrilling tales of Scottish heroes, brave knights, and ancient battles from long ago. These stories sparked a fire in my imagination and made me dream of becoming a storyteller myself one day.
When I grew up, I followed my father's wishes and studied to become a lawyer. In 1786, I began my apprenticeship in his office, and by 1792, I was a practicing advocate in Edinburgh. It was a good and respectable job, but my heart was always wandering back to the old tales of Scotland. In my spare time, I traveled all over the countryside, visiting small towns and remote farms. I listened carefully to people and collected old poems and ballads—the songs and stories of the people. In 1802, I published them in a book called *Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border*. I wanted to make sure these wonderful tales were never forgotten by anyone. This was just the beginning of my journey as a writer.
Soon, I started writing my own long poems filled with adventure and romance. My poem *The Lady of the Lake*, published in 1810, was so popular that people from all over the world traveled to Scotland just to see the beautiful lochs and mountains I wrote about! After writing poetry for a few years, I had an idea for a new kind of story: a historical novel. This is a story that mixes real events from history with characters that I made up. In 1814, I published my first novel, *Waverley*. I decided not to put my name on it because I was a well-known poet and wasn't sure if people would like it. But they loved it! The book was a huge success. I wrote many more novels like *Rob Roy* and *Ivanhoe*, which came out in 1819. For years, people just called me 'The Author of Waverley,' and it was a fun secret to keep.

With the money I earned from my books, I began building my dream home in 1812, which I named Abbotsford. It looked like a castle from one of my stories, and I filled it with historical treasures like suits of armor, old swords, and thousands of rare books. I loved living there with my family. But in 1825, my life took a difficult turn. The company that published my books went out of business, and suddenly I owed a huge amount of money. It was a very scary time, but I refused to give up. I made a promise to pay back every single penny, no matter how long it took. To do this, I told the world that I was the author of the Waverley novels and set to work, writing book after book. I knew the power of a good story, and I was determined to write my own happy ending.
I spent the rest of my life writing to fulfill my promise, and I did. I lived to be 61 years old, passing away at my beloved home of Abbotsford in 1832. Even though my life had its challenges, I am so proud of what I left behind. People remember me today as the inventor of the historical novel, a writer who brought the history of Scotland and England to life for readers everywhere. My stories of courage, honor, and adventure are still read all over the world, and I hope they continue to inspire young readers like you to find the magic in history and to tell your own great stories.
