The story

Solon: The Lawmaker of Athens

Hello. My name is Solon, and I lived a very, very long time ago in a famous city in Ancient Greece called Athens. I loved my home and was proud of our beautiful city. But when I looked around, I saw that many of my fellow citizens were unhappy. They were struggling every day, and it made me feel sad. I knew in my heart that I had to find a way to help them and make our city a better place for everyone.

The biggest problem in Athens was about fairness. A few people were very rich, but most were poor farmers who worked hard on their land. Sometimes, a farmer would have a bad year and need to borrow money to feed his family. The laws at the time were very harsh. If a farmer couldn't pay the money back, the law said he and his whole family could be taken away and sold as slaves. This wasn't fair at all, and it was causing a lot of anger and sadness all across our city.

The people of Athens knew something had to change. In the year 594 BCE, they chose me for a very important job called an archon. This meant it was my duty to write new laws to help solve our city’s problems. My most important new rule was a big one: I canceled all the debts that were crushing the poor farmers. I also made a brand new law that said no person from Athens could ever be sold as a slave for not paying back money. You can imagine the joy and relief that families felt. They were free and safe, and that was the first step to making Athens a fair city for everyone.

My new laws did more than just help people with money problems. I believed that everyone should have a say in how our city was run, not just the rich and powerful. So, I created new groups where regular citizens could come together to talk about problems and help make important decisions for Athens. This was a new and exciting idea at the time. It helped start something we now call democracy, which is a word that means 'power to the people.' After I put my laws in place, I decided to travel for ten years to let the people of Athens get used to their new, fairer way of life.

I lived a full life and saw my city begin to change for the better. I lived to be about 70 years old. The ideas I put into place helped Athens become a great and famous city, known for its fairness and wise thinking. My work showed that when people are treated fairly and have a voice, a city can grow strong. The most important idea of all—that every citizen should be part of the government—is still used in many countries around the world today.
