Hello. My name is Thucydides, and I lived a very, very long time ago. My home was in a sunny place called Athens in Greece. When I was a little boy, I loved to listen to stories. I would hear amazing tales about heroes and big adventures. But what I loved most of all was writing down true stories. I wanted to make sure that we would never, ever forget the important things that really happened.
When I grew up, I became a general. A general is a leader in an army, and it was a very important job. But my most important job was writing. A big war happened between my city, Athens, and another city called Sparta. It was a very long war. I wanted to write down everything I saw and heard, just like a reporter you might see today. I made sure to write only what was true so everyone would know the real story.
I wrote a very long book all about the war. I wanted people in the future to read my book and learn from what happened so long ago. I lived a long life, and even though I am not here anymore, grown-ups still read my book today. It helps them understand why things happen. My story shows that telling the truth is one of the most important things you can do.
