The story

Vespasian: The Soldier Emperor

Hello! My name is Vespasian. I wasn't born in a palace like some emperors. I was born on November 17th, in the year 9, in a small countryside town in Italy called Falacrina. My family wasn't famous or royal, but we were very hard workers. Growing up, I saw how important the great city of Rome was, and I knew I wanted to serve it. So, when I was old enough, I decided to become a soldier.

Being a soldier was a great adventure! It was my job to protect Rome and its people. I got to travel to many faraway places I had only ever heard stories about. In the year 43, I sailed with my soldiers to a cloudy island called Britannia, which you know today as Great Britain. I was a good leader, and my legion, which is a big group of soldiers, won many important battles. Because of our success, people all around Rome started to know my name.

After an emperor named Nero was gone in the year 68, Rome had a very difficult and confusing time. In just one year, the year 69, three different men tried to be emperor, and there was a lot of fighting in the streets. People were scared and unsure who was in charge. This messy time was called the 'Year of the Four Emperors.' My soldiers knew I was a strong leader, and they believed I could bring peace back to our home. They declared that I should be the next emperor.

I became the emperor at the end of the year 69. My most important job was to make Rome peaceful and strong again after all the fighting. I made sure the city had enough money to fix things that were broken and to build new, wonderful buildings for everyone to enjoy. Around the year 72, I started work on my most famous project: a giant stadium for shows and events. You might have heard of it. It is called the Colosseum!

I was the emperor for ten years, and I worked hard to help Rome become a happy and safe place again. I lived to be 69 years old. Today, people remember me for bringing peace after a messy civil war. They also remember me for starting the construction of the amazing Colosseum, which still stands in the middle of Rome today. It reminds everyone of the great things we can build when we all work together.
