The story

Vitus Bering: The Great Explorer

Hello, I am Vitus Bering. I was a sailor who loved big adventures on the giant, blue ocean. A long, long time ago, I was the captain of a very big ship. My favorite thing to do was sail far, far away to see new things. I loved the feeling of the wind pushing my ship across the water. Exploring the sea was my biggest dream, and I got to do it almost every day. It was so exciting to look out from my ship and wonder what I would find next.

I had a very important question that I wanted to answer. I wanted to know if two huge pieces of land, called Asia and North America, were connected to each other. Were they holding hands, or was there water between them? In the year 1725, I started a very long trip to find out. I sailed on my ship for a very, very long time. We sailed and sailed, watching the waves and the sky, always looking for the answer to my big question.

After a long time sailing, I found the answer. There was water between the two big lands. They were not connected. It was a very big discovery. I lived a full life of adventure on the sea. Today, people remember me as a brave explorer. To help everyone remember my big trip, they even named the water I found the Bering Strait, after me.
